Bathukamma, the floral festival of Telangana State, today set a world record and made it to the Guinness Book of Records with participation of 9,292 women out of 10,029 turned up singing songs related to it in a rare feat at LB Stadium here on Saturday.

The rare feat surpassed the previous Onam record with 5,211 women’s participation in Kerala. Undeterred by sudden cloudburst, the womenfolk thronged the stadium only to set the record by making the rounds of a 20ft high “Bathukamma” decorated to suit the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, GHMC Mayor Bonthu Rammohan expressed happiness over the Bathukamma getting place in the Guinness Record. The entire premises of the LB stadium echoed with Bathukamma songs, Kolatam, drum beats and dances.

Rammohan said he aim of the flower festival is to spread its fame beyond continents, the mayor maintained. The State festival, which is being culminated on Saturday with 10,000 Bathukammas of myriad and attractive varieties, will attract the audience, he said. The presentation of such a lot of numbers of Bathukammas at one place in the city will remain in the history of Telangana, Rammohan said. The floral festival will be showcased with songs reflecting Telangana culture and traditions, he said.

Home Minister Nayani Narsimha Reddy expressed delight at the State festival creating a Guinness record as the women sang the songs for 12 minutes. The minister extended greetings and thanked the women for daring rains to set a world record. He said the credit for the record goes to Nizamabad MP Kavitha and praised the officials for their coordination in the mega event. Telangana Legislative Council Chairman Swamy Goud said Telangana is the only region which worships flowers. He greeted the women for the record and greeted the Mayor for the successful program.
