Russian President Vladimir Putin, addressing the Russian Olympic team said that the decision to ban some Russian athletes from the Olympics is "not compatible with sport, justice in general, or the basic norms of law".

Putin further said that the absence of Russian sportspersons will significantly affect the intensity and diminish the spectator value of the event.
