PUNE: Ace Indian shooter, who had won bronze at the London Olympics in the 10m air rifle, secured a quota place by winning bronze in the men's 50m prone event at the Fort Benning World Cup on Friday.
With the medal, Gagan became third Indian shooter to have won a Rio Olympic berth for the country after pistol shooter Jitu Rai and rifle shooter Apurvi Chandela secured the places at World Championships and Changwon World Cup respectively.
In a tense final, Gagan shot 185.8 for the third-place finish, while USA's Michael McPhail won gold and a ticket to Rio Games. The American shot 208.8 in the final. With 206.3 points, the silver medal went to Norway's Kristian Ole Bryhn. Since the Norwegian had already won a quota place in the 50m 3 position event at Changwon, the second available quota went to Gagan.
Though it was a tough qualification round, Gagan managed to make it to the final by finishing eighth.
