India will organise Yoga Festival in China next month to commemorate the declaration of June 21 as International Yoga Day by the UN last year, besides organising a series of events in a number of Chinese cities. The International Yoga Festival would be organised at the picturesque Chinese city of Dujiangyan, close to Chengdu from June 17-21, in which over 5000 people were expected to take part, K Nagaraj Naidu, Director, Investments of the External Affairs Ministry, said.

Nineteen eminent Indian yoga teachers from Astanga, (Mysore style), Sivananda, Kaivalyadham, Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram, Isha Hatha Yoga and Indea Yoga institutions would take part, Naidu, who was earlier the Consulate General of India at Guangzhou, told a media briefing here on Monday. In all, over 20,000 Chinese were expected to take part in the yoga events being organised by the Indian Embassy here in different cities to celebrate the UN Yoga Day, he said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take part in the Yoga-tai Chi event along with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang during his visit to Beijing on May 15.

Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art practised for defence training and its health benefits. Modi is arriving on a three day visit to China on May 14 during which he will visit Xian, Beijing and Shanghai.
