An Aligarh Muslim University professor’s alleged comments that madrassas are dens of vice and homosexual activities, has sparked controversy. It has triggered protests in the campus.

Waseem Raja, AMU professor of history department, has been accused of saying that “Maulanas are involved in such activities” in a WhatsApp message while chatting in a group.

His message further stated that the fortunes of Muslim youth will only change for the better if madrassas in the country are banned. “We want removal of madrassa... Where homo sexuality is rampant...Maulanas are part of it,” he reportedly stated.

However, Waseem Raja, who has been teaching in AMU for the past 30 years, has denied the allegations and said he never made such statements.

While responding to media queries on Tuesday, he said "I did not say anything like that. I have been part of SAARC conferences in the past and I have always spoken about reformation of the community. Are madarssas not part of the community? That does not mean I said such things, my phone was hacked and I have blocked the chat group now."

On the other hand, students are hitting back at the professor’s purported comments. They have taken over social media to flak Raja.
