It is gladdening to note that Hyderabad, currently ranking second best among MICE destinations in the country (after Delhi), could soon become India’s convention capital. This fact has been highlighted in the International Congress and Convention Association’s 2014 report, which placed India at 35th position in the global ranking. The report points out that the major catalyst for this growth is the city’s location and the benefits it offers to MICE as well as leisure travellers.

Except for Hyderabad and Warangal as well as a few other pilgrim places like Yadagiri Gutta that came into reckoning recently, most of the places of tourist and pilgrim interest in TS have not been developed

In other words, Hyderabad, which hosted 18 meetings in 2014 drawing wowing global MICE-watchers, is now far better than Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Goa, Chandigarh, Jaipur and Kerala as a venue for global conventions. Although the TS Tourism authorities should train their eyes towards Paris, which retained its top city ranking, what Hyderabad has achieved, against odds like social unrest, capital flight and bifurcation blues, is quite remarkable. It also reflects the fact that Hyderabad’s heritage value as over four-centuries-old city and its trappings of modernity such as HI-TEC City and campuses of IT world majors are drawing leisure travellers and businessmen alike.

The newly created Telangana Tourism Development Corporation has its task cut out now. Undivided Andhra Pradesh saw a significant incre- ase in domestic tourist arrivals over the last decade, with the number of tourists crossing 20 crore mark in 2012. The fact that Seemandhra accounted for 11.5 crore tourists of the undivided AP figure should be an eye-opener for the corporation. Except for Hyderabad and Warangal as well as a few other pilgrim places like Yadagiri Gutta that came into reckoning recently, most of the places of tourist and pilgrim interest in TS have not been developed in line with international standards.

t is good that at least in the crucial MICE segment, the Shilpa Kala Vedika, as India’s second largest multipurpose convention centre-cum-auditorium, and venues like HICC and HITEX make Hyderabad simply irresistible.
