The Supreme Court on Wednesday questioned the centre on why there is difference in terms divorce laws for different religions.

The apex court questioned why the Christian couple need to stay separately for two years before filing for divorce, while couple of other religions need to stay separately only for an year.

The SC has asked the centre to make necessary amendments in relation to the matter.

The bench, which includes Justice Vikramajit Sen, said, "Why should Christians stay separated for minimum two years, when the period prescribed for others is one year? It does not make sense to us. It is a pure question of law and you (government) should have acted on your own."
