Disparaging people's verdict
The Congress, instead of highlighting public issues, is giving more importance to the PM’s personal remarks
Remarks and repartees are common in politics. But, insulting people and democratic credentials of the country is not fair. The Congress has touched abysmally low levels as far as politics is concerned. Congress leader Kapil Sibal made a veiled attack on the Union government, saying that Indian people had committed a mistake by choosing Narendra Modi as their Prime Minister.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Narendra Modi, won a historic landslide election victory in the 2014 General Election, winning more than 330 seats. The Congress party, which had been in power since 2004, managed to win only 42 seats and also lost the status of Opposition party in the Lok Sabha.
It is clear that the people of the country gave their verdict with faith in BJP. Now, it is for the ruling party leaders to make the dreams of 1.25 billion people come true. This being so, it is not fair for the Congress to disparage the popular mandate and question their wisdom in voting the BJP to power.
The painful remarks made by Sibal have negatively impacted the stature of the Prime Minister and lowered the dignity of his office. The PM is perceived as a good orator by many. However, the Congress, instead of highlighting public issues, is giving more importance to the PM’s personal remarks.
Congress leaders should do their homework well before levelling allegations on others. As an opposition party, the Congress has every right to criticise the government and point out its loopholes. However, it is not fair to blame the people for reposing faith in other parties. As the Congress is now out of power, the party’s leaders seem to have high levels of frustration; and, hence, are raking up unnecessary issues and making remarks which are in no way related to public issues.
