Sexual harassment of women has become a menace in the present day society and the most astonishing factor of it, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) is that in most of the cases people of acquaintance were indulging in crime. Of the total complaints received in 2015, the alleged offenders were neighbors, according to NCRB. In 2016, the NCRB report says the figure has risen to 95 %. Most cases were reported in national capital Delhi and states like Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Chandigarh.

Cases of sexual harassment were also reported from other states also but the number is comparatively low. Meanwhile women activists say that most of the victims harassed by family members don’t come out openly and complain to the police fearing dire consequences. In Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, two sisters were raped by their father for years, still they never complaint to the police and finally the Women Commission has brought it to light.

The activists like DPS Bokhara director Hemalatha S Mohan feels that lack of morale education at tender age is one of the main reasons for the deteriorating human and ethical values in the society. She said that both at home and school children should be taught of moral values.
