UGC bats for greenery

Universities Grants Commission (UGC) will soon start UGC environmental studies courses in colleges aimed at more awareness on environmental issues.

UGC stated that it has proposed a 50 lecture environmental studies as core-module to be taught as compulsory subject for the the second year under graduation students.

"About 1.5 lakh students will take up this course on pollution, ecology,social issues on environment, etc," said V Ramana Rao, of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University-Hyderabad.

UGC also asked all universities to start its 'One Student, One Tree' eco- drive. As part of the drive all varsities will distribute free saplings to college students under the Special Plantation Drive, UGC stated.
