Chemists selling adulterated skin creams

The Telangana Drugs Control Administration officials on Friday conducted surprise checks at various drug dispensaries and found that 110 chemists and druggists across the State were indulging in sale of skin creams containing steroids. The drug control administration officials have received credible information that some of the chemists were selling adulterated skin creams to the public. The adulterated creams contained steroids and the chemists were selling them without valid prescription and bills as over the counter drugs.

The skin creams containing steroids were Skin light cream, Melacare cream, Look brite cream, Lumaglo cream, Melalite 15 cream and Panderm+

The skin creams containing steroids were Skin light cream, Melacare cream, Look brite cream, Lumaglo cream, Melalite 15 cream and Panderm+. DCA Director Dr Akun Sabarwal said that surprise checks on May 28 and 29, across the state and identified 110 chemists who were selling hazardous skin creams. He said that 29 medical shops in Hyderabad and surrounding areas were found selling the medicines without prescriptions and 86 shops were identified in the eight districts.

He said that as many as eight shops in Nizamabad, 15 in Karimnagar, 12 in Warangal, 12 in Mahabubnagar, 11 in Medak, six in Khammam, 13 in Nalgonda and nine shops in Adilabad, and four shops each in Secunderabad, SR Nagar and Rajendranagar, three shops each in Gowliguda, Jeedimetla and Chikkadpally, five shops in Malkajgiri, one shop in Saroornagar, two in Hayathnagar, were found in sale of steroid containing creams without prescription.

The director said that cases have been booked on the shops and their managements under Section 65 of Drugs and Cosmetics Act and further action was being initiated. He said that Advice of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL) President Dr Venkatraman from Mysore, was taken to organize the surprise checks, he said.
