Tollywood film-makers and the actors have always been fascinated with dual roles.Back the 60s and 70s, dual roles were an innovation and such experiments bought a lot of freshness to the stories. The formula became a rage in 80’s with stalwarts like NTR, ANR, Krishna, Sobhan Babu, portraying the roles which strike a chord with the audience. Though it’s a challenge for the actor to play two roles at once, our stars are game for it as the confusion or the excitement their characters create on-screen is always relished by the audience. It appears this trend has found its way back into Tollywood as the big stars are bracing up for the double delight.
Balakrishna, who will be seen playing dual roles in his upcoming film Lion, has shed some weight for one of the roles. Although playing dual role is not new for the actor, he ensured that it his characters are contrasted completely in terms of appearance, dialogue delivery and body language. "I have worked relentlessly to strike a balance and bring novelty to the roles. There are a lot of shades in both the characters and I feel it’s refreshing for the audience,” says Balakrishna.
Kamal Haasan is another superstar who is always been enamored of dual or multiple roles. Once again, the actor will be seen in a double role in his forthcoming film Uttama Villan. The versatile actor is playing the roles of an 8th century drama artiste and a modern-day superstar in this period drama directed by Ramesh Aravind.
Joining the bandwagon of stars to essay dual roles is Nagarjuna. The actor will know audiences with his double-avtaars in his upcoming family entertainer Soggade Chinni Nayana, directed by new-comer Kalyan Krishna. "The film is set in rustic backdrop and my role will have mass elements. After many years, I will be sporting a dhoti in this film, which will be made on the lines of Hello Brother,” said Nagarjuna.
Fans of Prabhas are in for a pleasant surprise when they get to see their matinee idol’s interesting double role in his most awaited magnum opus Baahubali directed by SS Rajamouli. The actor is playing a father and son in this period drama made in two parts. This is for the first time in Prabhas’ career that he will be seen in a dual role.
Ravi Teja will be seen playing dual characters in his forthcoming release Kick 2. Directed by Surender Reddy, the film is a sequel to the actor’s blockbuster film Kick. Ravi Teja is essaying the role of a father and son in this action-comedy. "Ravi Teja is sporting a lean look for one of the characters in this film. The actor underwent a huge transformation for the old role too. Both the characters will have some scenes together and audience will be thrilled to bits watching him in two different looks at the same time,” explains a source from the production team.
