Shashi Kapoor honored with Dadasaheb Phalke Award

The famous veteran actor, Shashi Kapoor received the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest honour in Indian Cinema at Prithvi Theatre on May 10.

The actor has aged 77 years is the third member of family to get the award.

The Award was presented by the Union, Finance, Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley.

The actor was accompanied by his son and daughter on the stage and was presented with a ceremonial shawl and certificate by Mr.Jaitely.

"He brought Hindi cinema and Hollywood closer," Mr Jaitley said after the presentation.

Shashi Kappor is a star of over 175 films over a 40-long-year career. His cinematic successes include Deewar, Kabhi Kabhie, Namak Halaal, Sharmilee, Junoon, New Delhi Times and Merchant-Ivory films like The Householder, Heat and Dust and In Custody.

The ceremony was in Prithvi Theatre as it was established by Mr Kapoor and his late wife Jennifer Kendal, both of who had strong roots in theatre and stage.

Usually the Dadasaheb Phalke Award is presented at National Film Awards in New Delhi but as Shashi Kapoor was too unwell to attend the ceremony in the capital on May 3 and is receiving his award in Mumbai today.
