Impressed with the utility of Boeing C-17 Globemaster III aircraft in post-Nepal earthquake evacuation operation, Indian Air Force is on its wheels to buy three more C-17 aircraft for Rs 8,700 crore.

The IAF has expressed its interest to the government to add 3 very heavy transport aircraft to its fleet of 10 C-17s that were ordered in 2011 and inducted in 2013.

According to the 2011 contract, India can buy 6 additional C-17s over its order of 10 aircraft.

The proposal is yet to receive Manohar Parrikar-led Defence Acquisition Committee’s approval.

As per the standard offsets rule of the defense ministry, Boeing is responsible to invest Rs 2,600 crore in the Indian defence manufacturing sector once after the approval.
